From the Head Coach…
NWD hit the 17/18 season “running” (read paddling) with some strong results at a cold windy Dobroyd regatta on Sunday 6th August.
With only 22 paddlers we split into a Blue and Red teams for our pet event Senior B mixed in a 10’s format with our super fit president paddling in both teams in both heats.
Both teams made the final from 16 other teams with heat wins and places.
Borrowing a sweep and drummer from Illawarra, the Nowra Blue team won the final defeating DSA and Nowra Red third paddling with 4 men and 6 women.
Looking good for our 20’s format for the rest of the season.
The afternoon program saw the wind turn into a strong semi headwind from a annoying crosswind making the sweep’s jobs at the start even more challenging and the starts became a bit rough.
Nowra’s 10 women put in strong heat results winning both to making the final in Senior A, but a less than ideal start after a long line up delay saw them drift over a start buoy, thus effectively giving other teams a head start. With determination they made up lost ground for a 2nd place.
Nine men and one women took on 10 men teams (some reported to look like our grandkids) in senior A open. After making the final with 2 heat seconds we bashed out a 2nd place in final (beating those pesky kids). We were outdone by sneaky George (DSA) who likes to start a bit in front of of everyone else! Bring on pontoon starts! (Oh sorry-it was a fun event.)
Thanks to Jane our volunteer and all others that keep the NWD machine ticking over.
Next regatta is race 1 at Penrith on SATURDAY 2nd Sept so turn up for training (OFF SEASON IS OVER) and get your name down when the team sheet goes up.
