Another very busy day for the 22 Nowra Waterdragons at Penrith Race 2 with entries in senior B, senior A and Open/Womens masters; all over the 500m course.
The main object of the Senior A races was to give our new L2 sweeps Doug and Warren sweeping experience in race conditions and to Nowra’s credit and vigorous sweep encouragement, we earned a 3rd place with Doug and a 2nd place with Warren. We therefore qualified for the final in 6th position out of 18 teams. Unfortunately, we had to forfeit that place in the final, as after winning both heats in the Senior B and top qualifying there was only a one race gap between finals. Our focus was on our Senior B final, which we took out by over 4 seconds against quality Sydney teams, thereby building up valuable points in the perpetual trophy for that event.
After lunch we joined forces with the Port Hacking team to compete in the Women’s masters and the Open masters.
The women’s team hasn’t hit their straps yet this season and after a 3rd and 5th didn’t make the final out of 11 teams.
The men’s or open masters event has been dominated for several seasons by the very experienced FFB/Nth Beaches team. We ran has 2nd to them in both heats but were closing the gap in both races. Then after a doggard paddle by every paddler, we were able to win the final by 1/2 second in the very impressive time of 2.08.26. Well done everyone!
Thanks to those that keep the NWD machine ticking over and to our volunteer on the day; Rod Flemming.
The next regattas are the distance challenge at Dobroyd on 12th Nov, followed by the Bei Loon 8k event on 25th Nov.
See you at training!
